Praise the Dead: The Ecological Values of Dead Trees

Is a dead tree a living organism?

If “alive” means growing, breathing cells, a dead tree wins hands down. While only a thin layer of wood and bark are growing and actively transporting water and nutrients from roots to leaves in a live tree, all of a dead tree's cells are teeming with insects, fungi, and bacteria.

"Dead" Saw Palmetto

Dead trees (snags) and the subsequent downed log provide habitat for many living organisms, including fungi, mosses, lichens, invertebrates, birds, mammals, reptiles, and amphibians. The decayed surface of a snag provides a growth substrate for fungus, moss, and lichen. Invertebrates such as scorpions, moths, beetles, and ants use spaces under the bark as cover and as places for foraging. Birds use cavities for nesting or roosting and branches and broken tops are used as perches and to support nests structures.

Primary cavity excavators, such as woodpeckers and nuthatches, need the soft wood of snags to create cavities for nesting. Secondary cavity nesters, such as bluebirds, flycatchers, swallows, and small owls, nest in old abandoned holes that were created by primary cavity excavators. Cavities serve as mammal dens, food storage, and resting and escape cover. Bats roost in crevices created by lightning scars and under loose bark - an 18” by 24” piece of bark can support more than two hundred roosting bats! Once snags fall and become downed logs, the dead tree then becomes useful in other ways.
A Pileated Woodpecker getting lunch and creating a nest

Elevated areas on downed logs are used as lookouts and feeding sites for reptiles, birds and small mammals. The spaces between loose bark and wood are used as hiding and thermal cover by invertebrates, reptiles, and amphibians. Protected areas under the log are used as nesting cover by birds and as hiding and thermal cover by mammals. The root wad is also useful to birds for perching and nesting. Once the down log has further decomposed, the soft wood is used by squirrels for storing food and by mice for constructing burrows. The duff or sawdust is used by some birds for dusting.
Females have a red crest like the males but don't have the red cheek stripe.
The Pileated Woodpecker is a large and noble-looking species of Woodpecker that is found across much of North America. The species is easily recognized by its distinctive appearance, with a black body, white neck, and white wing-stripe, as well as its very loud, distinctive calls.
The Pileated Woodpecker is most commonly found in mature and old-growth forests, where it feeds on a variety of insects, including carpenter ants and wood-boring beetles. The species is also known for its distinctive drumming, which can often be heard echoing throughout forests in Florida.
Males have a bright red crest and a red stripe on the cheek.
The Red-Headed Woodpecker is a fascinating bird that is native to Florida and fiercely territorial. As the breeding season approaches in May, the male calls out to potential mates by rapidly drumming on dead trees. Once a pair forms, they work together to carve out cavities in dead or dying trees to lay their eggs.
The female incubates while the male brings food to both her and the hatchlings. After the young fledge, the family stays together for a while, foraging and roosting together before eventually venturing out on their own to establish their territories.
Red-Headed Woodpeckers are not picky eaters, with a diet consisting primarily of insects, fruits, and nuts. They are also known to be opportunistic feeders, taking advantage of any food source that comes their way – even stealing eggs and nestlings from smaller bird species.

Hey What is Permaculture?

Permaculture is a philosophy of design for creating a sustainable human culture. That is, it's a way of thinking about how we set up the support systems around us: shelter, food, water, energy, society and business. Well designed permaculture systems allow us to live as a beneficial part of the ecosystems around us.

Art & Naturism.......naturist spirited art

Sylvia Sleigh, artist

Her most celebrated work began to emerge around 1970 when, motivated by feminist art principles, she produced a series of paintings which featured male nudes alluding directly to canonical female nudes, for example those of Ingres, Titian and Velázquez.

Pluto: Robert Lucy
Realist painter Sylvia Sleigh (1916-2010) was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award by Women’s Caucus for Art shortly before her death in 2010. Celebrated for her portraiture and male nudes, she “turned traditional portraiture on its head by presenting the male nude posed as a reclining Venus or odalisque.” The Times, Oct 2010.
Born in 1916, Sylvia Sleigh grew up in Hove and was a student at the Brighton School of Art. When she died in New York in 2010, she had been honoured with the announcement of a Lifetime Achievement Award, 2011 by Women’s Caucus for Art and had received the 2008 Distinguished Artist Award for Lifetime Achievement by the College Art Association.

Her most celebrated work began to emerge around 1970 when, motivated by feminist art principles, she produced a series of paintings which featured male nudes alluding directly to canonical female nudes, for example those of Ingres, Titian and Velázquez.
Asked in 2007, “How has feminism changed contemporary art practice?” Sylvia Sleigh responded:
“I feel that my paintings stress the equality of men & women (women & men).
“To me, women were often portrayed as sex objects in humiliating poses. I wanted to give my perspective. I liked to portray both man and woman as intelligent and thoughtful people with dignity and humanism that emphasized love and joy.
At The Turkish Bath
“I did this by placing my models in beautiful settings outside or inside against colorful landscapes or pleasing fabrics. To me, it made me think that the model was a jewel, being emphasized by their surrounding or environment. Feminism allowed me to express my thoughts freely. It gave me the freedom to show the beauty of the body – the most luminous parts equally. My style is the way I can best express these ideas.
“Feminism gave us this intense freedom of expression thus allowing a change. Anything that helps to express the artist’s ideas, whether it is to surprise, glorify, shock or simply express a philosophy will lead to a change or will simply allow an opportunity for change.”
